SEDHURO Peace Building

Peace Building and Social Cohesion Initiatives in Somalia

Transforming Communities Through Dialogue, Youth Empowerment, and Unity

SEDHURO Peace Building Activities

SEDHURO has emerged as a leading actor in advancing peace, dialogue, and community resilience in Somalia, particularly across Gedo and Jubaland regions. Rooted in community ownership and inclusive participation, SEDHURO's peacebuilding approach transforms youth and communities from participants in conflict into proactive agents of peace, tolerance, and social cohesion.

Through civic education, leadership training, community forums, and youth clubs, SEDHURO promotes dialogue and non-violent conflict resolution. Initiatives such as the Beled Hawo Youth Leadership Enhancement Project, implemented with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), have demonstrated how structured sports, poetry, and cultural events can bridge divides and foster unity under the slogan "Put down the gun, pick the pen."

"Put down the gun, pick the pen" — SEDHURO's powerful call to action transforms youth into ambassadors of peace through education, dialogue, and empowerment.

SEDHURO's peacebuilding model integrates youth empowerment, livelihood creation, and social reintegration. Recognizing that unemployment and marginalization drive conflict, the organization provides vocational skills, employable trades, and capital start-ups for young people—including those formerly associated with armed groups—to help them rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose. These initiatives link peacebuilding with economic empowerment, transforming vulnerable youth into ambassadors of stability within their communities.

SEDHURO also emphasizes women's leadership and inclusion in all peace processes. Women leaders and youth such as Madam Afi Adow and Anab Sheikh Hassan have been instrumental in mediation, community dialogue, and advocacy. Their involvement demonstrates SEDHURO's belief that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without the meaningful participation of women.

Impact

Youth Empowerment

In advancing regional harmony, SEDHURO promotes cross-border peacebuilding through youth-led initiatives, such as football tournaments bringing together Somali and Kenyan youth. These encounters foster mutual respect, learning, and acceptance—transforming sports into a tool for dialogue and long-term peace across borders.

At the community level, SEDHURO works with local elders, administrators, and parents to promote collective accountability and shared ownership of peace. Through volunteerism, civic education, and mentorship, communities are empowered to replace dependency on external aid with a spirit of cooperation and resilience.

The legacy of SEDHURO's peacebuilding work continues to grow. Trained youth leaders now serve as mentors and peace ambassadors, mediating disputes, guiding their peers, and advancing education as a pathway to peace. Communities across Gedo and Jubaland recognize SEDHURO for mobilizing collective action and transforming divisions into opportunities for unity.

Guided by its vision of dialogue over division, knowledge over violence, and unity over conflict, SEDHURO continues to nurture a generation committed to building a peaceful, inclusive, and resilient Somalia.
